What's a Favicon?


Faaaavicon. Faaaaaaaavicon. That's a fun word to say! Now, let's get down to what it is.

A favicon is the tiny little favorite icon that you see at the top of your browser, next to your website's name. If you're a Squarespace user, you may have noticed this tiny little black box up in the top right corner of your tab. Favicons are meant to be replaced when building a website on these platforms and help maintain your brands consistency.

What should my favicon be?

A favicon should be an extension of your brands identity. If you're like us, you've got 20+ tabs open in your browser, and recognizing a favicon is important to finding what you are looking for fast. The design can be your logo, 

Make it Simple

In the browser, they are shown at 16x16 pixels. That's not a lot of room to work with, so you have to be strategic when creating yours. Make sure it's something that ties back to your brand. 


CREATING a Favicon

When creating your favicon in Adobe Illustrator, create a workspace that is 300x300px. Keep in mind all platforms have different dimensions so be sure to check with your website provider before creating the document. If you don't have an icon or are struggling to find inspiration, check out Pixabay where you can search for totally FREE vector graphics that you can edit any way you please.  Once you've got the perfect favicon, save it out as a png and you are ready to upload to your site!
