How to Verify Your Site in Bing Webmaster Tools
First things first, what is Bing Webmaster Tools?
Bing Webmaster Tools is a free service as part of Microsoft's Bing search engine which allows webmasters (that's you) to add your website to the Bing index crawler. Make sure that your password has been removed from your Squarespace site before moving forward with verifying. A site that is in trial mode on Squarespace cannot be verified because it is hidden behind a CAPTCHA. Make sure to get your site out of a trial before verifying.
To verify your site with Bing Webmaster, follow these steps:
Visit Bing Webmaster Tools, and create an account. They will ask you to verify your email. Once you have verified and logged back into your account, you will land on your account page.
The first option on the page is to add a site to your account. Go ahead and type your URL in and hit ADD.
Next you will be taken to a page where they will require a bit more information about the site. Go ahead and fill out everything on the page.
Regarding your sitemap file, if you are a Squarespace user, your site map url can be found by attaching /sitemap.xml to the end of your url.
So ours is located at http://www.thelaunchbosses.com/sitemap.xml
Yours will be http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
After submitting all necessary information, hit SAVE.
On the next page, they will require that you verify that you own your URL. You can do so in 1 of 3 ways. The fastest and easiest option is #2, which is to copy and paste a <meta> tag in your default webpage. Copy the code the Bing provides in the first shaded grey box and go into your Squarespace account. From the Home menu, select Settings--> Advanced and then Code Injection.
In the Header box, you can paste the code that Bing provided and then click SAVE.
Next, return to the Bing Webmaster Tool window and click Verify. If you were successful in verifying your site, you will be taken to the dashboard where you can monitor your site and review the pages that have been indexed as well as any errors that may be occurring on your website.
